HiFi Rose RD160

High-Performance Audio Component

A converter built by separating the jobs that create noise

The HiFi Rose RD160 is a standalone DAC designed around physical and electrical isolation. Its digital-processing and analog-conversion stages are assigned to separate AKM devices: an AK4191 handles digital filtering and delta-sigma processing, while two AK4499EX chips perform conversion for the left and right channels. HiFi Rose calls the broader layout CIM, or Completely Isolated Module architecture.

Three custom power-supply sections reduce interaction among digital processing and the two analog channels. Oxygen-free copper wiring carries critical internal signals, and MUSES J-FET dual op-amps form part of the output stage. The heavy aluminum chassis, integrated heat-sink side panels and internal shielding address mechanical vibration, radio-frequency energy and operating temperature together rather than relying on one dramatic component.

Clocking is handled by a high-precision oven-controlled crystal oscillator. The RD160 also provides four upsampling modes and six selectable digital filters, allowing the listener to evaluate how different reconstruction choices interact with a recording and the rest of the system. A hidden front display reveals source, filter, upsampling and volume information when needed, then recedes behind the clean faceplate.

The connection panel is intended for several transports and computers, while fixed or variable output lets the RD160 operate through a conventional preamplifier or drive a power amplifier directly. HiFi Rose’s NRA analog filtering is used to manage residual high-frequency noise without flattening the music into an antiseptic presentation. Command Performance AV can compare input interfaces, clocking options, filter modes and output levels in the context of the complete system, where grounding and source quality can be as important as the converter chip itself.
