MSB Reference Digital Director

High-Performance Audio Component

Optical isolation with a dedicated linear supply

The MSB Reference Digital Director separates source management and digital filtering from a compatible MSB DAC. Four modular input bays accept the system's digital source interfaces. The Director then sends processed audio to the DAC through MSB's ProISL laser-fiber connection, breaking the electrical path through which noise from computers, network hardware and transports can otherwise enter the converter.

Isolation is only half of the design. The Director contains two digital-signal processors rated at 12 billion operations per second each, supported by two dedicated FPGAs. That processing platform runs MSB's more advanced reconstruction filters outside the DAC. Two-way communication allows the DAC and Director to behave as one system: the DAC's front panel remains the place for input selection and settings rather than forcing the listener to operate two independent interfaces.

The Reference model adds an in-house low-noise linear power supply with custom isolated transformers derived from MSB's DAC powerbases. Its billet-aluminum chassis begins as a 65-pound precision plate and is machined for more than six hours. The finished unit weighs 28 pounds and accepts standard M6 × 1 equipment feet, including MSB's Viton supports.

Format capacity depends on the installed input, reaching PCM rates from 44.1 kHz to 3,072 kHz at up to 32 bits and DSD through 8x. All inputs support DSD over PCM. Control facilities include infrared remote operation, a 12-volt trigger, power-mode control and display-brightness adjustment.

MSB's site currently presents mixed status information: the main support index lists the Reference Director among current products, while the Reference support page labels the related product family discontinued. Command Performance AV can verify current availability directly rather than pretending that contradiction does not exist. We can also confirm DAC firmware, install modules and fiber links, and check that filter mode—not pass-through—is actually engaged.
