Balanced dual-mono phono performance

Based on Gryphon’s Legato phono-stage work, PS3 is a true balanced dual-mono MM/MC module designed to preserve the cartridge’s naturally balanced signal. It updates the earlier PS2 and PS2-S with a wider range of moving-coil loading choices.

Rear-panel switches provide independent left/right MC impedance adjustment, while compatible Gryphon component menus select MC or MM operation. The short, discrete signal path runs in Class A without global negative feedback.

A phono cartridge produces one of the smallest signals in an audio system, so noise control and precise loading matter before any meaningful amplification can occur. The Gryphon PS3 treats the left and right channels separately and keeps the path from input to output DC-coupled. Polypropylene capacitors are reserved for RIAA equalization, while low-noise regulated power supplies serve the analog circuitry. The module’s four-layer board uses heavy 70 µm copper traces, and its XLR input allows the balanced cartridge signal to remain balanced through the gain stage.

Setup is broad enough to accommodate a serious cartridge collection. Moving-coil gain is 64 dB, with load choices extending from 20 ohms to 1,600 ohms in stepped settings. Moving-magnet operation provides 42 dB of gain and a standard 47-kilohm load with 220 pF capacitance. Because the loading switches are accessible from the rear panel, owners can compare settings without opening the component. Installed inside a compatible Gryphon amplifier or preamplifier, PS3 also avoids another chassis, another power cord and an extra pair of interconnects.
