Fine-groove contact without an impractical setup burden

The MoFi StudioSilver MC is a low-output moving-coil cartridge built in Japan around a nude MicroLinear stylus and boron cantilever. The stylus profile is shaped to make extended contact with the groove walls, helping it follow short-wavelength high-frequency information while distributing tracking force over a larger contact area than a basic elliptical tip. The rigid, low-mass boron cantilever transfers that movement to the generator with less stored energy.

Inside the generator, a neodymium magnet works with a permendur yoke. The coils use Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting, commonly abbreviated PCOCC, to provide a continuous, low-resistance signal path. The cartridge produces 0.35 mV, placing it firmly in moving-coil territory and making phono-stage noise, gain and loading important parts of the result. MoFi recommends a load of at least 100 ohms; the final value can be chosen by listening within the phono stage's available range.

The aluminum body provides a rigid reference for the generator and includes threaded mounting holes. Threaded inserts make installation much less awkward than trying to hold tiny nuts beneath a cartridge while aligning it in the headshell. At 7.2 grams, the StudioSilver works with a broad range of contemporary tonearms. Recommended tracking force spans 1.8 to 2.2 grams, while the specified response runs from 20 Hz to 33 kHz.

Cartridge performance depends on geometry as much as construction. Overhang, offset angle, azimuth, vertical tracking force and anti-skate all affect how the stylus meets both groove walls.
